ED'S REMARKS (excerpted) TO THE COMMUNITY MADE AT THE ROCKLAND COUNTY LEGISLATURE AFTER HIS FORMAL SWEARING IN - JANUARY 5TH, 2006
Good evening.
I would like to thank our Clarkstown Town Justice, Judge Craig Johns, for taking the time from his busy schedule to administer my first oath of office as an elected representative of the people. Asking Craig to share this special moment in my life was an easy call given the things we share in our lives. Our respect for Rockland Community College, where he taught and my son attended, along with service within the law enforcement community, and membership in the Rockland County Shields.
My wife Jean has been the stalwart; the epitome of what "a cop’s wife" needs to be to keep a family together. Over the years, her support of me has always been unwavering, irrespective of danger, time or convenience. She has, and continues to be, my inner strength, allowing me to be my very best. Proper eloquence has not been created that could express my gratitude to her, so I will simply say something I should say more often; I thank you and I love you.
My sons, Chris and Mike, are the two greatest gifts I have received in my lifetime. I have been blessed to see both of them grow straight and strong, and I only hope they know just how proud I am of them, and just how extraordinarily the accomplishments they have already achieved in their young lives have reflected on our family. And I would be remiss not to mention Jenn, a very special lady who will become my daughter next year when she and Chris are married.
To all my friends, both old and new found, many of whom are here tonight, I thank you for your faith in me. It has been both humbling and invigorating. It was your commitment and dedication to what government can be, to what government should be, that has brought me to these chambers tonight. I thank you for the work, and most of all, I thank you for your trust. That trust is something I will always treasure, and fully respect, every moment that I serve you.
To my neighbors in District 5 here in New City and Haverstraw, and to the people of Rockland County, you can be assured that I have already moved forward with what will be the hallmark of my service as your Legislator a ground up, hands on approach to the representation of, and advocacy for the people. 48 hours after you gave me the honor of representing you and your families last November, I commenced a broad based, community outreach.
I have already met with numerous civic groups across the district; conferred with many officials at the county and town levels; visited with a number of constituents in their homes; spoken with RCC students and faculty, local PTA’s, and school officials; listened to the concerns of the business community through the New City and Haverstraw Chambers of Commerce, and the Rockland Business Association; attended town and planning board meetings regarding critical issues in our community, such as the Cropsey Farms purchase and the development of the Bradlees’ shopping center; met with our local youth groups and not-for- profit agencies; sat down with our local heroes, the volunteers who respond to our fires and critical care needs; and even have had the opportunity to assist my neighbors off New Hempstead Road, Lady Godiva Way, and Forest Drive in Haverstraw. I do not believe in the oft-repeated notion of "town or county" issues; I believe there are people issues, family issues, and community issues, all which merit the full attention from the county level of government.
In short, my pledge to my constituents is that, as your Legislator, I will continue the advocacy you have seen from me over the years as a civic association leader, and over the past eight weeks as your Legislator-elect. I look to bring your voices to today’s compelling issues. The crushing cost of living here; public safety, especially for our children; ethics; the retention and expansion of our volunteer first responder force; and a balanced development of housing and business that respects our community, our natural resources, and our tax base.
My approach to government will be simple. Government should not be there to control our lives; it should be there to assist us in our lives. Government should not, and cannot, legislate all things; it should provide tools through legislation that will enhance the common good.
Finally, to my fellow legislators, it is with pride and respect that I join you tonight. I look to work with you, and bring to this forum a broad life experience that includes managerial, executive, and practical experience in the public and private sector.
I seek to combine that with my community service to residents, schools, and youth, and work within this legislature, both singularly and collectively, for the betterment of my district, and the good of the people of this county.
In closing, I am hopeful that I can help provide a seamless access to government, and now advocate for people with the authority of government. I look forward to the challenge with a simple, yet basic, goal to make every effort to make life just a little bit easier for those whom I serve.
God bless you all, and God bless this great country of ours. Thank you.
